The first mile of the West Highland Way is on our doorstep

Ninety-six miles begin at a granite obelisk in a Milngavie precinct. Here is how to walk the opening stretch as a local.

2 min read

Every year thousands of walkers stand beneath the obelisk in Douglas Street, photograph one another, and set off for Fort William. Most of us walk past without a glance.

The first leg to Mugdock Country Park is a gentle three-mile introduction: woodland tracks beside the Allander Water, a short climb, and a reward of tea at the far end.

What to know before you go

Parking in Milngavie is easiest at the station; the trains from Glasgow Queen Street run frequently. Wear proper footwear after rain.

A note on manners

Say hello. The walkers have a very long way to go, and a friendly word from a local goes further than you’d think.
